My Favorite Recording Session Didn't Involve a Rock Star
I've been fortunate enough to spend more than 40 years working in the audio industry.
I've worked with Grammy winners.
Rock stars.
Pop artists.
R&B legends.
Hip-hop royalty.
I've engineered live shows for artists like Madonna, Aerosmith, U2, and Chick Corea. I've worked on television, films, video games, and audiobooks.
Those experiences have been incredible.
But when people ask me about my favorite recording session...
It wasn't with any of them.
Four Guys and a Handful of Dollar Bills
One day, four young musicians walked into my studio.
You could tell immediately they had never been in a professional recording studio before.
They were respectful.
Excited.
A little nervous.
Like so many bands, they'd spent months rehearsing in garages and bedrooms, pouring everything they had into writing songs.
Then it came time to pay the deposit.
Instead of pulling out a credit card, they started counting crumpled one-dollar bills across my studio counter.
Pizza delivery tips.
Trader Joe's paychecks.
Whatever they could scrape together.
They had pooled every dollar they had because they believed in one song.
That image has stayed with me ever since.
They Had a Plan
They explained they were only booking enough time to record the song.
After that, a friend of theirs—who had just gotten Pro Tools while attending recording school—was going to mix it.
They weren't trying to cut corners.
They were simply doing everything they could to stretch every dollar.
I respected that.
Then I Heard the Song
Sometimes, after enough years in this business, you hear something special.
Not because it's perfect.
Not because it's polished.
Because it's honest.
The performance.
The songwriting.
The emotion.
Everything about it told me these guys were different.
I Made Them an Offer
Instead of simply recording the session and sending them on their way, I asked them a question.
"What if I helped finish the entire project?"
I offered to record it.
Produce it.
Edit it.
Do the overdubs.
Mix it.
Master it.
In return, I'd receive a small percentage of the publishing.
It wasn't about trying to own their music.
It was about betting on people I believed in.
Thankfully...
They said yes.
The Rest Is History
That song became my first Gold Record.
Even today, I still receive publishing checks from that decision.
But here's the interesting part.
The publishing checks aren't why it's my favorite session.
The Gold Record isn't why it's my favorite session.
Why I'll Never Forget It
My favorite part was watching four hardworking musicians bet everything they had on a dream.
No entitlement.
No excuses.
No shortcuts.
Just belief.
They reminded me what passion looks like before success arrives.
And I was lucky enough to play a small part in that journey.
The Lesson
One of the biggest misconceptions about this industry is that the most meaningful moments happen after people become famous.
In my experience, that's rarely true.
The most meaningful moments happen long before anyone knows their names.
They're found in the late-night rehearsals.
The long drives.
The pizza delivery shifts.
The second jobs.
The musicians counting out dollar bills because they believe in one song enough to sacrifice for it.
That's where careers really begin.
Final Thoughts
Over four decades, I've been blessed to work with some incredible artists.
But the sessions I remember most aren't always the biggest ones.
They're the ones filled with heart.
They're the ones where people believed before anyone else did.
And every time I hear someone say they're waiting until they have better gear, more money, or the perfect opportunity, I think back to those four young musicians standing at my studio counter with a pile of wrinkled one-dollar bills.
Sometimes that's all you need.
A dream.
A great song.
And the courage to bet on yourself.
